​Nintendo officially unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2 during its recent Nintendo Direct presentation on April 2, 2025. The successor to the immensely popular original Switch is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and brings a host of enhancements and new features aimed at elevating the gaming experience

Release Date and Pricing

The Nintendo Switch 2 will be available globally starting June 5, 2025. The standard console is priced at €469.99/$449.99/£395.99. Additionally, a bundle including the highly anticipated "Mario Kart World" game will be offered at €519.99/$499.99/£429.99 respectively. ​

Hardware Enhancements

The Switch 2 boasts a larger 7.9-inch 1080p LCD, an upgrade from the original's 6.2-inch screen, providing sharper and more vibrant visuals. When docked, the console supports 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, delivering a more immersive gaming experience on compatible displays.

Under the hood, the Switch 2 is powered by a custom Nvidia chipset, enhancing performance for both existing and upcoming titles. The console offers 256GB of internal storage, a significant increase from its predecessor's 32GB, and supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB for additional space.

Battery life is estimated between 2 to 6.5 hours, depending on usage, with a 5,220 mAh lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Charging is facilitated via USB-C, with an estimated recharge time of approximately 3 hours when the system is in Sleep mode.

Joy-Con Controllers and Accessories

The redesigned Joy-Con controllers feature magnetic attachments for a more secure connection and improved analogue sticks for enhanced durability. A notable addition is the "C" button, which activates the new GameChat feature, allowing players to communicate via voice and video chat during gameplay. Interestingly, the Joy-Cons can also function as a mouse in supported games, offering versatile control options.

An intriguing accessory is the Piranha Plant-shaped camera, designed to enhance the console's group chat feature. This camera includes a flexible, detachable stem for optimal positioning and a functional mouth that acts as a privacy shutter when not in use.

Game Library and Backward Compatibility

At launch, the Switch 2 will offer a robust lineup of 50 titles, including "Mario Kart World," "Donkey Kong Bananza," and enhanced editions of popular games like "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." The console maintains backward compatibility with most original Switch games, though some older titles may experience compatibility issues. 

Notably, third-party titles such as "Elden Ring," "Cyberpunk 2077," and "Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade" are also slated for release on the Switch 2, expanding the console's diverse game library.

Online Features and Services

The introduction of the GameChat feature marks a significant step forward in online interaction, enabling players to communicate seamlessly during gameplay. This feature requires a subscription to Nintendo's Switch Online service. Additionally, the console supports Wi-Fi 6, ensuring faster and more stable online connectivity.

Upcoming Events and Availability

Nintendo has announced "Switch 2 Experience" events in various cities worldwide, including London, Paris, New York, and Los Angeles, allowing gamers to get hands-on experience with the new system. These events are scheduled to begin in April and continue through May. 

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 are set to commence on April 8, 2025, through various retailers and Nintendo's official website. Given the anticipated demand, securing a pre-order is advisable for those eager to experience Nintendo's latest innovation at launch.
